The National Sports Brain Bank
At the University of Pittsburgh
On May 18th, the Chuck Noll Foundation reached an incredible milestone: seeing the formal announcement and opening of the National Sports Brain Bank (NSBB) at the University of Pittsburgh. This NSBB, funded in part by the Chuck Noll Foundation, the Pittsburgh Foundation, and the R.K. Mellon Foundation will serve a vital role in assessing the impact of sports on athletes at all levels of play.
Research will focus on the impact of age, genetics, substance abuse, concussions, and other elements in determining the development of Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, or even CTE. By recruiting volunteers well before their passing, the NSBB will be able to conduct a longitudinal study by monitoring participants’ health and collecting data sets annually to compare the conditions of their brain after they die.
